Beneath the well-arranged control panel of the Rave-o-lution 309 lies a device that combines sound generation, a sequencer, and effects. Operation is via numerous push buttons and knobs, a data entry wheel, and a 2x16 character display. The fully digital sound generation consists of a monophonic synthesizer and a drum section. Both have independent control sections and data storage. The sound generation of the 309 is a new development by Quasimidi, its structure differing from the Quasar, Technox, and Raven. It is based partly on samples and partly on digital emulation of analog sound generation. Its sound is direct, bright, and powerful. Quasimidi has managed to somewhat loosen the relatively rigid operating structure of pattern-oriented sequencers: it works across a so-called Mastertrack pattern, allowing for recording, for example, filter sweeps that span multiple pattern boundaries. Unlike the Raven, patterns here can be used in different songs without complex copying.
