The Hot Rod product line, launched as an upgraded version of the Blues series, has achieved success among lovers of harder sounds.
Based on experience, it can be stated that among lovers of tube sound, Fender is the benchmark for clean sound. This arguably bold statement is unlikely to be challenged even by those loyal to other brands. This is so true that, for example - to name just one of many - even the amplifiers of the inventor of the Rectifier sound use Fender's clean sound as a model when building their clean channels.
The Deluxe also features the tried-and-true 12AX7 and 6L6 pairing: 3 of the former work in the preamp section, while 2 x 6L6 vacuum tubes provide the guaranteed 40 watts of full-tube power. As a result, the device is loud. Not a little, but very... In the best sense of the word, as the sound is truly full, warm, yet extremely fast and has excellent dynamics. The footswitch-selectable overdrive channel provides a true crunch sound by default - a legacy of the Blues Deluxe - which, with the addition of a compressor, might be enough for some who prefer subtler overdrive.
The sound is characterful, driven mainly by the 6L6s at higher volumes. This is also characteristic of the - also footswitch-selectable - More Drive channel; this is a true Lead function, with enough gain for guitars equipped with humbuckers.
Using it with a Stratocaster, we are reminded of the truth of the old saying: for Fender, Fender...
