Kramer Guitars emerged in the 1970s as a successful challenger to Gibson and Fender, the world's leading manufacturers of quality electric guitars and basses. Kramer's association with guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen early in his career gave Kramer global renown for its unique guitars with unique features, including the sophisticated Floyd Rose™ tremolo system. A generation of hard rock and metal guitarists inspired by Van Halen, including Richie Sambora, Tom Morello, Vivian Campbell, and Mick Mars, helped Kramer become the "custom" hardware for everyday players and start an industry trend that continues today.

Kramer Guitars was founded in 1976 and established its first headquarters in Neptune, New Jersey, with two factories. Kramer's early models featured guitars and basses with aluminum necks, a distinctive "tuning fork head" headstock, and Ebanol fretboards. Kramer set themselves apart with unique features such as high-quality Schaller™ tuning keys and bridges, and specially wound DiMarzio™ pickups, at a time when neither Gibson nor Fender offered custom services or advertised parts from outside manufacturers. Kramer guitars and basses featured aluminum inlays and zero frets made from Petillo fretwire. Each neck had a Walnut or Maple insert set in epoxy. The bodies were made from high-quality walnut or maple, though some early instruments featured rare woods not commonly used in guitar manufacturing, such as Koa, Shedua, and Bubinga.

In the early 1980s, Kramer began manufacturing wood-carved guitars featuring the company's unique "beak" headstock and an early version of the Rockinger™ tremolo system, which was an industry breakthrough, allowing for extreme tremolo bends while maintaining the guitar's overall tuning. In 1981, founder Dennis Berardi's chance encounter with Eddie Van Halen led to the company's first major endorsement deal. At the time, Van Halen was already customizing his stage and studio guitars, using various necks, bodies, and bridges from different manufacturers to find a tremolo system that suited him. Van Halen's involvement with Kramer was a watershed moment in the guitar industry. Very quickly, Kramer guitars became synonymous with Eddie Van Halen and then with the world's most popular rock guitarists. In 1983,

In the mid-1980s, with the addition of renowned custom designer Seymour Duncan, which equipped every Kramer instrument, a new headstock design, and Schaller locking tuners on all American models, Kramer began to broaden its customer base, adding Mick Mars of Mötley Crüe and Vivian Campbell of Whitesnake. In the early 1990s, production problems in New Jersey and overseas, the resurgence of strong competitors like Fender and Gibson, and the explosion of alternative rock bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana impacted Kramer's finances. Production ceased in 1991, and the company was acquired by Gibson Music Instruments in Nashville later that decade.

Today, Kramer is back in full force, ready to take the metal world by storm. With Kramer's latest and wildest models, combined with its world-renowned classic designs, the original heavy metal guitar company returns as the Gibson family's most rugged, loudest, and most significant division. Kramer remains a hub for cutting-edge ideas in guitar design. Every day, we provide new and experienced players with the tools to take their playing to the next level. We are Kramer - Classic Designs, Modern Edge.
